The Oscar-nominated actress will team up with husband Ben Falcone, who will direct the film and co-produce it with Melissa.

New Line Cinema has purchased the pitch “Margie Claus” from Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone and co-writer Damon Jones with McCarthy attached to star. McCarthy is expected to sing in the project, which would mark the first time the star will show off her vocal talents. The movie is described as “a broad holiday family musical” in the vein of Elf. Here’s the logline:

The story is set in motion when Santa Claus goes missing while delivering presents on Christmas Eve. His sweet wife Margie Claus must then put together an unlikely rescue team and set off from the North Pole for the first time in decades to rescue Santa and save Christmas.

New Line is hoping to create the same success with Margie Claus like they did with their $220.4M global-grossing holiday hit Elf which also spawned a Broadway musical. The project joins a current wave of musical films, including the critically-acclaimed La La Land as well as various upcoming projects such as The Greatest Showman starring Hugh Jackman, a Mamma Mia! sequel, and a movie adaptation of the Broadway smash Wicked. Falcone and McCarthy will produce Margie Claus through their On the Day production label.

Margie Claus marks McCarthy and Falcone’s third collaboration with New Line following the 2014 surprise hit Tammy, which earned over $100 million worldwide, and the recently wrapped Life of the Party, which will be released May 11, 2018 (Mother’s Day weekend). His acting credits include “Bridesmaids,” “Identity Thief” and “The Heat,” all of which also starred his wife. McCarthy’s recent credits also include Netflix’s “Gilmore Girls” revival and “Ghostbusters.” She will next star in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” directed by Marielle Heller. At the same time, McCarthy has been portraying White House press secretary Sean Spicer on “Saturday Night Live.”

Margie Claus will hit theaters on November 15, 2019.
