Elyse Hollander’s Madonna biopic script Blonde Ambition, the No. 1 screenplay on 2016’s The Black List, has been optioned by Universal Pictures.

The 2016 Black List, the annual list of popular unproduced screenplays voted for by Hollywood development executives, was crawling with biopics (two of which were about Stephen King) but one stood apart: Blond Ambition, by Elyse Hollander. With 48 votes, it was the most popular script on the list, and second place (Life Itself, by This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, 35 votes) wasn’t close. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the script has landed at Universal.

The script is set in early 1980s New York as Madonna Louise Ciccone works on her first album, struggling in a business that treats women badly, while also dealing with a burgeoning love life and the first hints of fame.

Madonna moved to New York from Michigan in 1978 to pursue dance but segued to singing and writing songs. After failing at a rock band, she switched to dance and pop. After achieving some success with a few dance singles, she began work on her debut album, Madonna, which was released in 1983. The album yielded hits "Holiday," "Borderline" and "Lucky Star," and set the stage for her ground-breaking Like a Virgin album.

It should be noted that, while today’s trade report spells the title as Blonde Ambition, the script was originally listed as Blond Ambition (without an “e”). The latter, however, is the way that Madonna titled her 1990 tour.

Blond Ambition will also highlight the Material Girl balancing her burgeoning fame with her love life, the Hollywood Reporter writes. Producers on the project are Universal-based De Luca, Brett Ratner and John Zaozirny of Bellvue Productions. Executive VP of Production Erik Baiers and Director of development Chloe Yellin will oversee production for the studio. Lucy Kitada will help oversee for De Luca Productions.

Universal’s modestly-budgeted Straight Outta Compton, released in 2015, grossed more than $200 million at the worldwide box office.
