Superman fans are finally getting the news they've been waiting for. Man of Steel 2 has finally entered active development!

According to TheWrap, "DC has been silent on a sequel to Man of Steel featuring Superman solo, leading many frustrated fanboys to believe that another film wasn’t going to happen. But a person close to the project told TheWrap that Superman is a top priority for the studio and getting the character right for audiences is of tantamount importance." The studio is keen to get the character right after this March’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was met with a toxic reception. The film scored just 27% on Rotten Tomatoes and suffered a steep drop-off at the box office after poor word of mouth.

When last we saw Henry Cavill's Kal-El, he was being buried beneath the ground, having sacrificed himself to stop Lex Luthor's Doomsday creation at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. His sacrifice inspired Bruce Wayne to recruit metahumans for a planet-protecting mission... which will be explored in Zack Snyder's Justice League.

“I think if we could get a good script it would be great to have a standalone Superman movie,” Zack Snyder said to IGN back in April. “I think that would be fun to do. Part of the reason we haven’t announced the standalone Superman movie was to support some of the events of (Batman v Superman).”

Released in 2013, produced by Christopher Nolan and directed by Zack Snyder, “Man Of Steel” earned $668 million at the global box office and launched the ambitious DC Cinematic Universe. The film kicked off DC’s revamped set of films, seen as a rival to Marvel’s cinematic universe. With a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s the best-reviewed film of the series.

Suicide Squad is in theaters now. Wonder Woman opens on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, the Batman solo movie and Man of Steel 2 are currently without release dates.
