The actress Carrie Fisher, best known for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” movies, was hospitalized in intensive care on Friday night after a medical episode aboard a flight to Los Angeles from London, The Associated Press reported.

Fisher, 60, went into cardiac arrest minutes before the end of the London to LA flight. Passengers attempted to revive her with CPR and she was taken to hospital when the plane landed after midday local time (20:00 GMT), the TMZ website said.

Actress Anna Akana was on board the flight when Fisher went into medical distress and she described the upsetting scene in a series of tweets.

Akana wrote that Fisher wasn't breathing "for 10 minutes or so" and CPR was administered until the plane landed.

Her brother Todd said she was in intensive care in Los Angeles.

"If everyone could just pray for her that would be good," he told Entertainment Tonight. "The doctors are doing their thing and we don't want to bug them. We are waiting by patiently."

Todd added that Carrie's condition is unknown. "We don't know. We hope for the best," he said. "We certainly do not know her condition, that's why she is in ICU. I'm sure everyone wants to speculate, but now is not the time for that."

Fisher has spoken and written openly about past health struggles including bipolar disorder and drug and alcohol abuse. In 2013, she was hospitalized after behaving in a bizarre manner while performing on a cruise ship.

"I was in a very severe manic state, which bordered on psychosis. Certainly delusional," Fisher later told People magazine. Fisher told People she was only 14 or 15 when she first developed signs of her bipolar disorder, and that her father, singer Eddie Fisher, also suffered from it. Actress Debbie Reynolds is Carrie Fisher's mother.

Fisher appeared in the original Star Wars trilogy and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a sequel released last year. She also appeared in other films including The Blues Brothers and When Harry Met Sally. She has written four novels and three memoirs and was previously married to the musician Paul Simon. In her latest memoir, she revealed that she and Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo, had an affair during the filming of Star Wars when she was 19 years old, and he was 33 and married with two children.

She told People magazine: "It was so intense. It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend."
