Director Clint Eastwood has cast the three American real-life heroes who thwarted a terrorist’s attack on a train in the upcoming drama  The 15:17 To Paris.

Director Clint Eastwood has reportedly cast Anthony Sadler, Aleksander Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone to play the movie versions of themselves in his next feature, The 15:17 to Paris, according to Variety. The director decided to hire the actual men following an extensive search for leads, and while he and the studio found actors right for the job, it was decided "at the eleventh hour" to go with Sadler, Skarlatos and Stone instead.

Based on the book The 15:17 to Paris: The True Story of a Terrorist, a Train, and Three American Heroes (which Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone co-wrote with Jeffrey E. Stern), The 15:17 to Paris recounts the true-life events surrounding three American men who subdued an ISIS terrorist armed with an AK-47 who was on a train from Amsterdam to Paris in 2015. The gunman reportedly had enough ammunition to kill more than 500 of the 554 passengers aboard the train; but thanks to the trio’s actions, there were only a handful of injuries and no fatalities in the attack.

The trio became international heroes in the wake of the incident, with Stone (who had his hand slashed by the terrorist in the attack) earning an Airman’s Medal and a Purple Heart, Skarlatos receiving the Soldier’s Medal and Sadler receiving the Defense Department Medal for Valor during a 2015 ceremony. The men also met with then-President Obama in the White House.

The 15:17 to Paris casting decision is similar to 2008's Gran Torino, where the director largely relied on an unknown cast. Jenna Fischer, Judy Greer and Ray Corasani have also been cast in the feature. Playing the various younger versions of the three leads will be Paul-Mikél Williams, Max Ivutin, Bryce Gheisar, Cole Eichenberger and William Jennings. Dorothy Blyskal will write the script, and the Warner Bros feature's producers include Eastwood, Tim Moore, Kristina Rivera and Jessica Meier.

Clint Eastwood most recently directed Sully, another based-on-a-true-story movie, and Eastwood is currently producing the upcoming A Star is Born remake.
