James McAvoy is set to star in Escape, the Blacklist script written by Vanya Asher with The Girl With All The Gifts helmer Colm McCarthy set to direct.

McAvoy, who is coming off the huge and somewhat surprising success of Split (which has spawned an anticipated sequel), will star in Escape, which McCarthy will direct from Vanya Asher's Black List script. McAvoy plays a professor in Sarajevo who risks all to stay behind and continue teaching while his family flees the battleground the city has become. But as the fighting escalates his chance to be reunited with them dwindles, and he must fight his way out. Deadline teases: "As the massacre escalates, his window of opportunity to join his family is quickly closing and he must fight his way out amidst the turmoil." The story is based on the experiences of Asher's family who lived in Sarajevo until 1992 when the city was besieged during the Bosnian War.

Speaking about why he wanted to do the project, McCarthy said:

Escape is the incredibly moving true story of Vanya’s father and how heroic it can be for a civilian to escape from conflict for the sake of his family. The themes are so powerfully universal – how humour can keep people sane through hardship, how a father’s promise to his son can be the strongest drive of all. I could not be more excited than to have James McAvoy join our team.

David S. Goyer and Kevin Turen of Phantom Four are producing alongside McCarthy’s The Girl With All The Gifts producer Camille Gatin. Asher will executive produce. IM Global is taking the project out at Cannes, while UTA and WME are co-repping North American sales.

There's no sign of when it'll start shooting yet, but we'd expect it to kick off this year. McAvoy will next be seen in Atomic Blonde, due out on 11 August, and has Submergence awaiting release. McCarthy also directed the pilot for new Superman prequel TV series Krypton, which has just scored a series order at the US SyFy Channel.
